Quick answer

Psyllium husk and flaxseed are not the same. Psyllium is a gel-forming soluble fiber with the strongest record, studied at about 10 to 19 grams a day. Flaxseed is a seed with fiber and plant oils, studied at about 10 grams a day in one small trial. SynoGut publishes no amount of either.

Key facts

  • Psyllium is the husk of Plantago, a gel-forming soluble fiber. Flaxseed is the whole seed of Linum usitatissimum, with fiber and plant oils.
  • Psyllium trials for constipation used about 10 to 19 grams a day.
  • The flaxseed trial used about 10 grams a day, baked into cookies, for 12 weeks in 53 adults.
  • The 2023 guideline found psyllium the only fiber supplement that appeared effective.
  • SynoGut names both on its bottle art but states no amount of either.
  • Both swell or add bulk with fluid, so each serving needs a full glass of water.

Are psyllium husk and flaxseed the same thing?

No. They come from different plants and they are different parts of those plants. Psyllium husk is the outer coat of the Plantago seed. Flaxseed is the seed of the flax plant, Linum usitatissimum.

Both give fiber, and that is why people mix them up. But the fiber is not identical, and the rest of the package differs. Psyllium is mostly a gel-forming soluble fiber. Flaxseed brings fiber together with plant oils.

When a search asks whether psyllium husk and flax are the same, the short answer is that they overlap in one way. Both are fiber sources. Past that, they are two separate ingredients.

What does psyllium do, and what did the trials find?

Psyllium forms a gel when it meets water. The idea is that this gel keeps stool soft and bulky so it moves along. That is the mechanism the trials are built around.

In a review of seven trials, 77% of adults on fiber responded, against 44% on placebo, with fiber doses from 10 to 22.5 grams a day (Christodoulides et al., 2016). Two of those trials gave psyllium at 10.2 and 19.2 grams a day.

A larger review pooled 16 trials with 1,251 adults. It saw benefit above 10 grams a day and with at least 4 weeks of use, and the fiber tested was mainly psyllium and pectin (van der Schoot et al., 2022). Gas was more common on fiber.

The 2023 guideline from two U.S. gut doctor groups backs fiber supplements for chronic constipation. It found psyllium was the only fiber supplement that appeared effective, as a conditional recommendation (Chang et al., 2023).

What does flaxseed do, and what did its trial find?

The flaxseed evidence is thinner. One small trial gave adults about 10 grams of flaxseed a day, baked into cookies, for 12 weeks. The adults had type 2 diabetes and constipation, and there were 53 of them (Soltanian and Janghorbani, 2018).

Constipation scores improved more than with placebo cookies. That is a real result. It is also one trial, with one group of people, using one food form. It cannot stand in for a body of evidence.

Read the form. The flaxseed was eaten as cookies at gram doses. A pinch of flax powder inside a capsule is not the same intake.

The seed also brings plant oils. The sources we hold do not tie those oils to any digestion result, so we list them as a feature of the seed, not a benefit.

How much psyllium or flaxseed can a SynoGut capsule hold?

Not much. A pharmacy school guide lists a size 00 capsule at 0.95 mL, which fits about 929 mg of lactose powder (UNC Pharmlabs). So even a large capsule holds under 1 gram of a dense powder.

Two capsules a day, which is the bottle math, likely hold about 1 to 2 grams of all six ingredients combined. The figure is our own estimate from capsule size and is not printed on any label. The psyllium share is only a part of that, and the flax share is a smaller part again.

Daily grams compared
SourceGrams a day
Psyllium in constipation trialsAbout 10 to 19 g
Flaxseed in the one small trialAbout 10 g
Two SynoGut capsules, all six ingredients together (our estimate)About 1 to 2 g

The gap is the main fact on this page. Both ingredients were studied at around ten grams a day. A capsule serving is a small slice of that.

Which fiber has the stronger case, psyllium or flaxseed?

Psyllium, on the evidence we hold. It has two reviews, a guideline and a set of trials behind it. Flaxseed has one small trial.

That ranking is about studies, not about you. A food you enjoy and eat daily can beat a supplement you forget. Flaxseed also comes as a whole food, and a whole food sits in the same meal as water, fruit and other fiber.

  • Choose psyllium if you want the fiber with the largest research record.
  • Choose flaxseed as a food if you like its taste and texture.
  • Choose neither as a replacement for the 22 to 34 grams of fiber a day that adults are advised to eat.

Adults need about 22 to 34 grams of fiber a day depending on age and sex, added slowly with plenty of liquids (NIDDK, 2018 (diet)).

Do both fibers need water, and is there a choking risk?

Yes to water. Psyllium swells as it soaks up fluid. Drug labels for psyllium must warn that it can swell and block the throat, and they ask you to take each dose with at least 8 ounces of water or other liquid (21 CFR 201.319).

MedlinePlus gives the same 8 ounce rule and says to stop psyllium if you have trouble swallowing or breathing (MedlinePlus, 2024). Flaxseed carries no specific caution in our sources. Gas is a common fiber effect, though, so any extra fiber should go in slowly.

Anyone who struggles to swallow, or who has a narrowed bowel, should leave fiber capsules alone. If you feel a capsule stick, or feel breathless after a dose, get medical help at once.

Where do psyllium and flaxseed sit in SynoGut?

Both are named on the bottle art, and both are marked Not stated for amount. The seller graphic shows psyllium first, but a picture order is not a weight order, so we cannot rank them by how much they hold.

The info site's longer list adds apple pectin and glucomannan. Pectin was one of the fibers that helped in the 2022 review, and glucomannan is another swelling fiber. Whether your bottle holds them depends on which list it follows.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers on psyllium and flaxseed, from the trials and guideline named on this page.

Is psyllium husk the same as flaxseed?

No. Psyllium husk is the coat of the Plantago seed and is a gel-forming soluble fiber. Flaxseed is the seed of the flax plant and brings fiber with plant oils.

Which is better for constipation, psyllium or flax?

Psyllium has far more research. The 2023 guideline found it the only fiber supplement that appeared effective, while flaxseed has one small 12-week trial. Ask your doctor what suits you.

How much psyllium did the studies use?

About 10 to 19 grams a day in the trials we cite, and a 2022 review saw benefit above 10 grams a day with at least 4 weeks of use.

How much flaxseed did the trial use?

About 10 grams a day, baked into cookies, for 12 weeks. That one small trial had 53 adults who had type 2 diabetes and constipation.

Does SynoGut state how much psyllium or flaxseed it holds?

No. Both are named on the bottle art, and the amount of each is marked Not stated. Two capsules likely hold about 1 to 2 grams of everything combined, an estimate from capsule size.

Do I need water with psyllium and flaxseed?

Yes. Take each serving with a full glass of water, at least 8 ounces for psyllium. If swallowing or breathing becomes hard after a dose, stop and get help.

Our view

Psyllium and flaxseed are two different fibers, and the evidence for them is not equal. Psyllium has the stronger record. Flaxseed has one small trial.

SynoGut names both and gives an amount for neither. With capsule size capping the total at a gram or two, it is fair to read the product as a small daily extra, not a copy of any trial.

If study-sized fiber is your goal, food and a measured powder are the closer match. Speak to your doctor first if you take daily medicines. SynoGut is a supplement, not a drug, and it is not FDA approved.
